Raped by Rank: Sexual Violence in the Military

All of these women and men have survived sexual violence, ranging from stalking to gang rape. They are a complex group willing to give their lives for this country but still invisible in their trauma. They live on a pendulum swinging from shame to rage to paralyzing fear. Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard—every branch of military service harbors predators. In 2021, 36,000 service members reported sexual violence—up 35% from 2018. Reports of this aggression up the chain of command is more often followed by retaliation not prosecution of the perpetrators.
